School of thoughts in Indian Philosophical diaspora.

Vedanta is the one school of thought well-remembered by those who are in Indian philosophy. But many other school of thought also have their legitimate place in the history of Indian philosophy.  The Nyaya system given shape to by the sage Gautama,  the Vaiseshika system conceived by the sage Kanada, the Samkhya syastem of the sage Kapila, the Yoga system of Patanjali,  the Purva Mimamsa system of Jaimini and the Uttara Mimamsa system formulated by the sage Badarayana are the six schools that admit the Vedas, the most ancient scriptures of India,  as authoritative.  These schools together known as 'astika darsanas', meaning "orthodox systems. " What we called Vedanta in none other than the Uttara Mimamsa system.

The basic texts of Vedanta are three -- the Upanishads, Brahma-Sutras and Bhagavad-Gita - - together known as prasthana trayi. The masters(acaryas) who commented on them differed in their interpretations, often one going against the another.  This resulted in the emerging of different schools  within Vedanta itself. Sankara's Advaita(Non-Dualism ) Ramanuja's Visistadvaita(qualified non-dualism), Madhva's Dvata(dualism)  or Tattva-vada(basic philosophy ), Nimbarka's Dvaita-Advaita(dualistic non-dualism), Vallaba's Suddhadvaita(Pure non-dualism),Caitany's school of devotion to Krsna- these are some important Vedantic systems.  The Vedanta -Sutras of Badarayana being the one text that all these acaryas commented on, they differed on the essential content of Vedanta mainly based on this one texts. Each commentator claimed that his was the real intention of the original author Badarayana.

School of thought that do not accept the authority of the Vedas also exist in India.Such schools generally are known as nastika darsanas(heterodox schools ). The most important of them are Carvaka(Indian Materialism), Jainism and Buddhusm.Buddhism itself has within its four sub-schools, known as Sautrantika,Vaibhasika,Yogacara and Madhyamika. Both the orthodox and heterodox lines of thought thus have their own separate six schools or sad-darsanas.Yet the name sad-darsanas is commonly used referring only to the orthadox schools.

All these thoughts were formulated millennia ago.The long flow of time since tjen effected many changes in the way of man's thinking, and the Age of Science emerged.
